Brown House - Salt Cay

The Brown House on Salt Cay is a wonderful example of the importance of Historical Preservation to the Turks and Caicos Islands. Originally built in 1832 by Alexander Harriot, the home was designed to store salt gathered from the Salt Ponds in the lower level and to house Harriot's family in the upper level. Of architectural note are the beams in the basement which were orginally the masts of ships presumably salvaged for building the structure; the mortise and tenon joined yellow cypress planking and the traditional wooden shutter "system" effectively cooling the veranda of the house while providing hurricane protection for decades.
